Spring is approaching, and with it comes the awe-inspiring migration of gray whales along the Oregon Coast. From March 22 to March 30, 2025, join thousands of enthusiasts for Spring Whale Watch Week, a prime opportunity to witness these majestic creatures as they journey northward to the colder waters of Alaska.
The Oregon Coast is renowned as one of the world’s premier whale-watching destinations, offering numerous vantage points and educational experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned observer or a first-time visitor, this guide will help you make the most of your whale-watching adventure.
Spring Whale Watch Week is scheduled for March 22–30, 2025. During this period, trained volunteers from Oregon State Parks will be stationed at various locations along the coast from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily, assisting visitors in spotting gray whales and providing insights into their behaviors and migration patterns.
The Oregon Coast offers unparalleled opportunities for whale watching due to its unique geography and the migratory patterns of gray whales. Each year, approximately 20,000 gray whales migrate along the coast, with the spring migration bringing them closer to shore, often within a mile, making for excellent viewing opportunities.
In addition to gray whales, observers may also spot other marine life, including orcas, humpback whales, and various seabirds, making the Oregon Coast a rich and diverse ecosystem to explore.
For those seeking a more intimate experience, several reputable charter companies operate out of Depoe Bay, known as the “Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast.” These tours offer the chance to observe gray whales up close and learn from experienced guides.
