Building sandcastles on the Oregon Coast is not only a fun and creative experience but also an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the coastal environment.
If you are visiting the coast in June, Cannon Beach is holding its annual Sandcastle Contest on June 15, 2024. Join spectators and builders for some inspiration for your next work of art!
Here are some tips to enhance your sandcastle-building experience on the Oregon Coast:
Look for a spot on the beach where the sand is moist and firm. Near the waterline is often a good choice, as the sand is damp and easier to shape. Luckily for you, the Oregon Coast is home to several long stretches of golden sandy beach!
Beach sand is ideal for building sandcastles. It is typically finer and more cohesive, making it easier to mold into shapes.
Mix water with the sand to create a more stable and moldable consistency. Use buckets to bring water from the ocean and wet the sand as needed.
Start with a solid base by packing wet sand into a mound or using a large bucket to create a tower. This foundation will provide stability for your sandcastle.
Be mindful of the tide schedule to avoid your creation being washed away.
Pack plastic shovels, buckets, and carving tools to help you create intricate details. Smaller buckets are useful for building towers and adding depth to your castle.
Get creative with shapes and forms. The natural elements of the Oregon Coast, such as driftwood and rocks, can inspire unique architectural features for your sandcastle.
Use plastic carving tools or your hands to carve windows, doors, and other details. Be gentle to avoid collapsing the structure.
Enhance your sandcastle by incorporating seashells, seaweed, driftwood, or other beach treasures into the design. These natural elements can add character, beauty, and a little flair.
Be mindful of the natural environment and avoid disturbing local wildlife or plants. Leave the beach as you found it, without any debris from your sandcastle-building activities.
