Perhaps the oldest structure still standing in Newport is the Yaquina Bay lighthouse. Sitting atop a bluff on the mouth of the Yaquina river this is the last remaining wooden lighthouse, and the only to have built in living quarters. Built in 1871 the lighthouse was restored and began operation again in 1996. Tours are free, and many trails cover the area making this a fun excursion. Yaquina head lighthouse is Oregon’s tallest lighthouse at 93 feet. Located just north of Newport on a narrow peninsula. The lighthouse has been active since its construction in 1873. The staff from the Bureau of land management gives tours of the lighthouse and you can climb the 114 steps for an impressive view. See more attractions and activities on the Central Oregon Coast.
