Paul Newman slept here. So did Henry Fonda, Lee Remick and Richard Jaeckel. Nominated for two Oscars, Sometimes a Great Notion is a movie based on Ken Kesey's bestselling book. It tells the story of a logging family on the Oregon coast, the house itself representing the toughness of the family. This house was built for the movie and has been lovingly cared for so you and your family can experience the iconic home for yourself. Nestled next to the Siletz River, Sometimes a Great Notion is roomy, gracious and comfortable, with five bedrooms, three and a half baths, and accommodations for up to 16 guests. Enter the home and enjoy the stained glass in the foyer and the original vintage wallpaper seen in the movie. The large living area boasts plenty of comfy furnishings. The kitchen and dining area is roomy enough for more than one cook, and an ornamental woodstove in the corner of the dining room provides extra warmth and ambiance. Off of the dining area is a door to the enclosed sunroom, comfortably furnished for you to savor your morning coffee while watching the river. The laundry room and a bathroom are located behind the kitchen. On the ground level of the home are two bedrooms, each with two queen beds. There is a card room with a poker table and a door to the deck and the backyard. Throw some steaks on the propane BBQ grill, and relax at the picnic tables with your loved ones. If it's raining, you can either play poker or try your luck in the game room at the pool table while enjoying some drinks from the wet bar. Upstairs you will find the master bedroom, imposing with a king bed, its own wood stove and a private deck. In the master bathroom, soak away your cares in the large claw foot tub set on its own rock platform. There are two other bedrooms upstairs; one with a queen bed with a double futon and the other with a queen bed. These bedrooms share a full bathroom. The river and mountains offer peace, serenity and outdoor entertainment. Bring your canoes, kayaks, fishing poles or crab pots. Enjoy the spring and fall salmon runs and fish off of the private dock. Sometimes a Great Notion is surrounded by the Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge and contains some of the finest examples of estuarine habitat in the country. Birdwatchers will thrill at the sight of Bald Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks, King Fishers, Snowy Egrets, Blue Herons and migratory birds. This secluded and scenic home is private but only minutes away from the Salishan Golf Course, the Salishan Marketplace and Lincoln City where you can enjoy shopping at the outlet mall or play the slots at the Chinook Winds Casino. Some of the finest restaurants in Oregon are located nearby, including Kyllo's Seafood and Grill. Your dog is also welcome at Sometimes a Great Notion. While you're here, watch the movie Sometimes a Great Notion, check out the memorabilia, and bask in the fact that you and Paul Newman have been in the same location.
Parking is available for up to five vehicles at this home. Please note that boats, trailers, and RVs are unfortunately not permitted. This home allows you to bring up to two dogs while vacationing here. Please do not leave dogs unattended at any time in or on the property. The wood stoves in the kitchen and master bedroom are temporarily out of service and cannot be used. The living room fireplace is for real wood only.

Sometimes a Great Notion

"Home was very unique and fun to be in. Lots of room with the many rooms being quite large. It seemed to go on forever. memorabilia from the movie made it fun. It was old but had great character and fabulouse view of the river. It was secluded which we enjoyed as well. We were there with 11 adults so having only 3.5 baths was a bit inconvenient. But more than that the plumbing was quite old and water making it to the shower head was unreliable. In the master bath the water did not come out of the shower at all. Very difficult to wash your hair in that situation. There was also a strong musty smell as you walked in the front door. It cleared a bit as the house was aired out or we just got used to it. People with allergies found it problematic. The beds were all comfortable and there seemed to be a nice compliment of necessary dishes and tools in the kitchen."

"Wonderful place to stay. Plenty of room for everyone. So much fun."

Sarah R. from Portland, 05/27/2017

"We were 5 family stayed there for 2 nights, it was a beautiful home and we enjoyed a lot. Location of the home is really nice, if you have more people then you can enjoy a lot. We had camp fire on our 2nd day and sitting on the grass for 2-3 hours then we all had itching for next 3-4 days. "

"Our family had a wonderful time at this house. It was very peaceful. We kayaked in the Mill port Slough and it was like being transported to the jungle with the birds and all the wildlife. Would definitely rent this house again!"

Belinda M. from Wilsonville, 07/13/2017

"The house was great. There was a bit of litter around the outside of the house that we thought should have been picked up. They window sills should have been dusted & windows cleaned from little hand prints. Coffee pot has not been cleaned out. Overall the experience was great & we will stay here again. Just a few little items that should have been addressed. For the price it should have been spotless. "

"Beautiful isolated home not far from the city. However, my family of 14 woke up on our third day with no running water. We rented the home on July. Of course for summer vacation. The supply come from a spring well to a humongous tank. It has not rained in weeks. The maintenance person said no rain, the well is not abundant. It was not until 3PM before we had water back. We should have been given credit for that day. I still would recommend this lovely home with an asterisk that large families should do water conservation for summer rental. Like the maintenance guy said, "everything would be fine if everybody don't take a shower the same time! ""

Edwin A. from Seattle, 07/22/2017

"We stayed here with my brothers and their families and our dad who was visiting from out of town. SAGN was one of his favorite films and he really enjoyed that history. The house was clean and well equipped and had comfortable beds. There was plenty of room for all of us without feeling crowded. We hope to return to this lovely, tranquil place."

"Our group of 10 adults stayed at 'Sometimes A Great Notion' for a reunion trip this summer and had a great time. The house is beautiful with plenty of character and charm both inside and out. The first floor seemed to go on forever, and the flow (different entrances to the rooms, multiple exits to outside, and two stairwells to the second floor) made it easy to enjoy the space without feeling like you're stepping over each other. There is also a ton of outdoor space including a large deck, covered patio, river dock, and two grass lawns. We did notice there were only a few functioning, screened windows in the house, but we mostly spent our time outdoors, so that wasn't a problem. The oversized lot and secluded location make you feel like you're in your own river-front oasis."

Jesse G. from Phoenix, 08/03/2017

" We celebrate my mothers 80th birthday at the house. It was everything we hoped it would be, calm and relaxing. We had a problem with one of the showers and the maintenance man was there within an hour. The only complaint, tables were wiped off when we got there and flies were in the windowsills. I guess it just made it more homey. Ha ha "

Kelly B. from Salem, 08/22/2017

"This was our 4th year renting this house. It is so big and spacious and works really well with our large extended family. Every year we have such an amazing time and really hate to leave. This house really does have pretty much everything you would need. Also thanks for supplying bar soap. That is so much better than what used to be supplied. The only thing that could have been better was more pods for the dishwasher, however, we just went and purchased a large bag and left it under the sink. "

Mark & Shirley B. from Springfield, 10/12/2017

"I've stayed at this house once before, and had forgotten how much I love it. It was a great place to gather family from all over Northern Oregon as well as Canada. We had 10 people on Friday evening, 15 people on Saturday evening, and five on Sunday evening. It was perfect for rainy-day indoor activities as well as sunny-day outside activities. Everybody enjoyed the space. Oh, and we watched the Sometimes A Great Notion movie two nights, which is a kick when you are sitting in the movie set!"

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS CONCERNING THIS PROPERTY

Why can't you host an event here?

Asked On 03/17/2016 Answered on 04/07/2016

The owners takes great care if keeping the home in it's orignal condition.  While we understand it would be a great place for an event, but we need to keep a small footprint so others may enjoy.

I understand dogs are welcome here at Sometimes a Great Notion. For future reference what is the additional fee should we decide to do that.

Asked On 04/06/2016 Answered on 04/12/2016

Our pet fees are based on the type of pet and the duration of your stay.  Call one of our dog lovin' team members, and we will give you the scoop.  DOGS LOVE THE BEACH!
